In Search of Excellent Requirements – Gathering, Documenting, and Managing Requirements

Course Code:

PTG002

Duration:

2 Days

Overview:

This seminar emphasizes the practical techniques of Software Requirements Engineering. These techniques can reduce project risk by improving the quality of the software requirements, thereby increasing the likelihood of a successful project that meets stakeholder expectations. Small group discussions encourage participants to identify requirements problems they face on their projects and to analyze the impacts, root causes, and possible solutions. Based on Karl Wiegers's book, Software Requirements, 2nd Edition, this seminar covers the entire requirements engineering process and describes dozens of tested methods that can help any organization improve the way it gathers, documents, and manages software requirements. Day 1 of the seminar introduces participants to the levels, characteristics, development, documentation, and prioritization of Software Requirements. Day 2 of the seminar coaches participants in the processes of modeling and prototyping to verify requirements. The Capability Maturity Model is discussed, and the seminar concludes with requirements management and change analysis and management.

Managing an Enterprise PMO

Course Code:

PTG004

Duration:

2 Days

Overview:

Project Management Offices have become increasingly popular in the past few years, as companies are more than ever striving to optimize the execution of internal processes and projects and drive out unnecessary cost wherever possible. Establishing a PMO is viewed by many organizations as a critical success factor for the alignment of projects with business strategies, for effective project management, and for project portfolio reporting to key stakeholders. It is becoming very difficult to gain the required cost efficiencies without a Project Management Office in place, especially as companies make the shift to project-driven organizational models. Day 1 of the course introduces participants to the purpose and benefits of a PMO, guides students through the process of evaluating organizational maturity, discusses how to select a PMO model, and covers the development of a PMO implementation plan and budget. Day 2 of the course discusses management of the PMO, covers the training needs and operational issues relevant to successful PMO implementation, and examines the cultural changes necessitated by PMO implementation

A Project Management Framework: Organizing, Planning and Controlling Projects

Course Code:

PTG005

Duration:

3 Days

Overview:

A Project Management Framework examines project management in theory and practice and the roles and responsibilities of the project manager. It offers a practical approach to managing projects, focusing on organizing, planning, and controlling the work of the project. The course is based on the best and most current thinking in the field, particularly the Project Management Institute’s (PMI®) approach described in A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide). Case studies, active participation in team workshops, and practical information reinforce learning. At the end of the course, participants will know why project management requires a high degree of professionalism, and how to develop that skill in their future projects. Day 1 of the course defines the technical and subsidiary plans for a project and includes workshops to develop the technical plan. The Work Breakdown Structure is shown to be the deliverable that guides and defines the work to be performed to complete the project objective. Day 2 of the course concludes the technical planning processes with Scope, Time, Cost, and Quality and defines the subsidiary plans of Human Resource, Communications, Risk, and Procurement. Workshops for each of the nine knowledge areas give participants hands-on experience in the planning processes. Day 3 of the course concludes the planning processes and guides the participants through Execution, Monitoring & Control, and Closing. An exception workshop gives participants practice in responding to change in the project.

Preparing for the PMP or CAPM Certification Exam

Course Code:

PTG006

Duration:

4 Days

Overview:

Major corporations are adopting A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide), 4th Edition, from the Project Management Institute (PMI), and the related Project Management Professional (PMP®) Certification, as the primary sources of competency in the field of Project Management. Market research indicates that employers want project management practitioners who have real experience leading and directing projects. To better meet this need, PMI has incorporated in the certification application process the requirement to document experience in leading and directing the various tasks required in effective project management. In addition, PMI places increased emphasis on situational questions in the testing process to better evaluate applicant skill in actually using their PMBOK® Guide knowledge. This emphasis has made the test more comprehensive and difficult than it was in the past, and increases the value of preparation course work prior to taking the test. This course, along with the participants’ review of the materials and repeated practice testing, will more than adequately prepare them to take the PMP® or CAPM® Certification Exam. Day 1 of the course provides a detailed review of the Project Management framework and context. Many of the Day One topics are only mentioned in the PMBOK® Guide and knowledge of those topics is critical to passing the PMP® exam. Day 2 of the course defines the Project Management life cycle, the Project Management processes, definitions of the nine Knowledge Areas, and Project Integration Management. Day 3 of the course defines the core Knowledge Areas of Project Management: Scope, Time, Cost, and Quality Management. Day 4 of the course defines the subsidiary Knowledge Areas of Project Management: Human Resource, Communications, Risk, and Procurement Management and the subject of professional responsibilities and ethics.

Duration:

1 Day

Look at your organization: decisions are made or sometimes avoided, projects are initiated, sometimes terminated, people are promoted, sometimes…

Intelligent Decision Making

Course Code:

IDM501

Duration:

2 Days

Overview:

Intelligent Decision-Making provides the insights and tools required by today’s executive facing a critical decision in a business or government environment. This 1-hour webinar describes the analytical process leading to an “intelligent choice”, including assessing the situation, stakeholders, risks, one’s self as a decision-maker, selling the decision, and the possible outcomes and required follow-up. Current logic has us believe that careful analysis leads to corporate objectives, followed by decisions and ultimately actions, but does that have anything to do with reality? Anyone who has spent some time in an organization knows that the order is often reversed: the analysis is biased to support pre-set objectives which justify a hastily made decision. If the outcome is satisfying, we call it a good decision. Or is it just luck? Any attempt to teach you how to make “good decisions” is a fraud. “Good” refers to the outcome, which always entails some unpredictability. Then, there is the question of “good for whom?” The decision-maker or one of the stakeholders at the expense of others? In this seminar you will acquire tools and techniques to improve your decision-making process such that you take into account more facets of the decision-making situation, set clear objectives, and make an intelligent choice between all possible alternatives.
